Why we all need a therapy theme song

Wednesday, 6 April 2016

I'm not going to lie to you, I was pretty suave individual in the 90's. I wore hand-me-down oversized Hound Dog pants. I listened to Savage Garden on repeat. And with the help of Sun-In, I rapidly became a shade of blonde that can only be described as 'I will never find a boyfriend baby poo yellow'.

Luckily, I was also a huge Ally McBeal fan. And that short-skirt-wearing, hallucinating lawyer taught me three amazing things that have stuck with me to this day.

We're all a bit quirky, everyone can benefit from a bit of therapy, and we all need a killer theme song.

In Season 1 Ally's therapist tells her to choose a theme song to sing in her head whenever she needs a little confidence boost. In true McBeal style, Ally's chooses a fast pace version of 'Tell Him' - cue the Shonda Rhimes and Ally awkwardly dancing in court.

From that point on music played a powerful role in my life (see ya later Savage Garden).

Nearly twenty years later, I swear by an updated version of this nifty little therapy method. Now that we have iPhones and Spotify, I always have at least three theme songs on rotation, ready to give me just the boost I need.

I'm listening to these absolute crackers at the moment:

1. Santigold - Can't Get Enough of Myself

This song is like a self-confidence enema straight into your motherf**king soul. Turn it on, turn it up, and celebrate yoselfie.

2. Live and Let Go - Hilltop Hoods

When I need to self-soothe, I shuffle to the Hilltop Hoods, get myself into a metaphorical foetal position and then RISE. Like a god damn eagle out of the ashes of my own self pity.

3. Swear Jar - Illy

Seriously, play this little gem whenever you're exiting a shitty place or shitty situation. I find it works particularly well when pulling out of the office car park and flipping your boss the bird.

xx

P.S. I wore those Hound Dog pants religiously until my mum cut them up. SHE.CUT.THEM.UP.
P.P.S. How great was Sun-In?
